Emirates Skywards
Emirates' frequent flyer program, best used for accessing its own premium cabin products — particularly the A380 Business and First Class. Transfer partners Amex MR and Citi TY make it reachable for US earners, but fuel surcharges on award redemptions are the primary cost to factor in.

About Emirates Skywards
Emirates Skywards is the frequent flyer program for Emirates, the Dubai-based carrier that operates one of the world's largest long-haul networks from its hub at Dubai International (DXB). Emirates has no alliance membership — it is fully independent. That means Skywards miles are used almost entirely on Emirates and its low-cost partner Flydubai. The program exists primarily for one purpose: giving travelers access to Emirates' premium cabin products, which are among the most acclaimed in commercial aviation.
For US-based travelers, the program is reachable via Amex Membership Rewards and Citi ThankYou, both of which transfer to Skywards at 1:1. Chase Ultimate Rewards does not transfer to Emirates — that misconception is worth clearing up immediately. If your primary bank currency is Chase UR, Emirates is not an accessible transfer target.
The single most important fact about using Skywards miles: Emirates adds fuel surcharges on award redemptions. These fees are collected in cash at booking and range from $300 to $600+ one-way on long-haul routes. They are not included in the miles cost. They are real, and they matter when you calculate whether using Skywards miles actually makes sense versus alternatives.
What Skywards miles are worth
Emirates miles deliver their best value in premium cabins on Emirates metal. Economy redemptions are poor — you pay fuel surcharges plus miles for an experience you could often book cheaply in cash. The math improves dramatically for Business and First Class.
- Emirates Business Class (A380): Roughly 50,000–80,000 miles one-way depending on distance. Cash fares for long-haul Emirates Business run $3,000–7,000 one-way. After accounting for $400 in fuel surcharges, you are still trading miles at 2–3+ cents per mile on a quality product.
- Emirates First Class (A380): Roughly 75,000–100,000+ miles one-way on long routes. Cash prices for Emirates First Class regularly exceed $10,000–15,000. The A380 First Class private suite with a fully enclosed cabin, lie-flat bed, and the onboard shower spa at certain airports is a genuine bucket-list experience. After surcharges of $500+, the implied value per mile can reach 3–4+ cents.
- Economy Class: Poor. The surcharges eat into the value, and Emirates economy does not command a significant premium over competitors. Use Skywards miles for premium cabins only.
The important asterisk: Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan can book Emirates First Class at approximately 90,000 miles one-way with no fuel surcharges. If your goal is an Emirates First Class redemption specifically, Alaska miles are often a better vehicle than Skywards miles themselves. The $500+ in surcharges on a Skywards First Class booking are avoided entirely by going through Alaska — making Alaska's 90,000-mile price effectively cheaper in total cost than Skywards' lower nominal mile count.
How to earn Skywards miles
The earning picture for US-based travelers is straightforward: transfer from Amex or Citi, or fly Emirates regularly. There is no US co-brand card and no portal accelerator that materially changes the equation.
Transfer partners: Amex and Citi only
Amex Membership Rewards transfers to Skywards at 1:1. Amex Platinum, Gold, and Green cards earn transferable MR points. This is the most common US path to Skywards miles.
Citi ThankYou Points also transfer to Skywards at 1:1. Citi Premier and Strata Premier are the primary TY-earning cards.
Neither Chase Ultimate Rewards nor Capital One miles transfer to Emirates. If you only hold Chase cards, you cannot transfer points to Skywards. This limits Emirates' accessibility relative to programs like Singapore KrisFlyer, which accepts Chase UR at 1:1.
Earning on Emirates flights
Emirates earns at 4 miles per dollar in Economy and 8 miles per dollar in Business Class on base fares. Elite tier bonuses stack on top: Silver adds 25%, Gold adds 50%. The exact earn rate varies by fare class and booking code — premium saver fares sometimes earn at reduced rates. Verify the earning rate for your specific fare class at booking.
Partner earn
Skywards has hotel and car rental partners including Marriott and Hertz where you can earn miles on eligible stays and rentals. Flydubai, Emirates' low-cost partner airline, also credits to Skywards. Rates vary. Useful for supplementing a balance when you are close to an award threshold, but not a primary earn strategy.
Elite status
Skywards has four tiers: Blue (base), Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Silver and Gold are achievable through regular travel on Emirates. Platinum is invitation-level — it requires 150,000 Tier Miles in 12 months, which is a substantial flying commitment.
- Blue (base): No minimum requirement. Access to earn and redeem Skywards miles.
- Silver — 25,000 Tier Miles or 25 flights: Priority check-in, 25% mileage bonus, extra baggage allowance.
- Gold — 50,000 Tier Miles or 50 flights: Emirates Business Class lounge access worldwide, chauffeur service on select routes, 50% mileage bonus, two complimentary upgrade certificates per year.
- Platinum — 150,000 Tier Miles: Emirates First Class lounge access, Dubai First Class Lounge and Spa, dedicated service desk.
Because Emirates is not in an alliance, Skywards status has no reciprocal value on other carriers. Gold status at Emirates is Emirates-specific. This is a meaningful limitation compared to, say, Star Alliance Gold from Singapore KrisFlyer or United MileagePlus, which is recognized across 26 carriers. Status pursuit in Skywards only makes sense if you fly Emirates regularly and frequently.
The A380 First Class private suite
Emirates' A380 First Class is the flagship redemption in this program. Each suite is a fully enclosed private cabin with a closing door, floor-to-ceiling privacy screens, a wide seat that converts to a fully flat bed, a personal minibar, and an 82-inch widescreen monitor. On select routes, Emirates operates a shower spa in the forward cabin — you can book a 5-minute shower slot inflight. Cash prices for these cabins routinely exceed $10,000–15,000 one-way on long-haul routes.
Award pricing for Emirates First Class runs approximately 75,000–100,000+ Skywards miles one-way on longer international segments, plus $500+ in fuel surcharges in cash. Even with surcharges, the implied value per mile is strong against cash prices in this range.
The alternative path: Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan books Emirates First Class at roughly 90,000 miles one-way with no fuel surcharges. If you hold Citi ThankYou points (which transfer to Alaska as well as to Skywards), compare the total cost — miles plus cash fees — before choosing which program to use for the booking.
Redemption playbook
Before you redeem Skywards miles
- Calculate total cost including surcharges. Look up the cash fees before transferring miles. On long-haul Business Class routes, add $300–500 to the miles cost. On First Class, add $400–600+.
- Check Alaska Mileage Plan availability first. For Emirates First Class, search award space through Alaska's website. If availability exists, the no-surcharge pricing through Alaska is often the better deal even at a slightly higher mile count.
- Search on emirates.com directly. Emirates award availability is visible on its own website. Search by cabin class and look for Saver-level availability.
- Transfer only with availability confirmed. Confirm the award space persists across multiple searches, then transfer from Amex MR or Citi TY and book immediately.
- Book one-ways. Emirates awards price one-ways at roughly half a round-trip. Book each direction separately for maximum flexibility.
Where Skywards disappoints
Fuel surcharges are the dominant limitation. The $300–600+ in cash fees on premium award redemptions is unavoidable when booking on Emirates metal through Skywards. Programs like Singapore KrisFlyer and Alaska Mileage Plan (for partner awards) charge no fuel surcharges. This is not a minor footnote — it directly reduces the value you extract per mile.
No alliance, limited partner redemptions. Skywards miles work on Emirates and Flydubai. Unlike KrisFlyer (Star Alliance) or AAdvantage (Oneworld), there is no network of 20+ alliance partners where you can apply these miles. If Emirates doesn't fly where you need to go, Skywards miles have limited utility.
No US co-brand card. There is no Emirates credit card available in the US market. Every Skywards mile earned by a US-based traveler comes from flights or from Amex/Citi transfers. There is no way to accumulate Skywards miles passively through everyday spend the way you can with Delta, United, or American programs.
Chase UR does not transfer to Skywards. If Chase Ultimate Rewards is your primary flexible currency, Emirates is not accessible to you as a transfer target. This is a common point of confusion — Chase partners do not include Emirates.
Bottom line
Skywards makes sense for one type of traveler: someone who holds Amex MR or Citi ThankYou points, has a specific Emirates Business or First Class redemption in mind, and has done the math including fuel surcharges. The A380 Business and First Class products are genuinely exceptional, and the miles cost at Saver rates represents good value against cash prices even after adding the surcharge fees.
For everyone else — particularly anyone primarily holding Chase UR, or anyone targeting First Class specifically — compare the Alaska Mileage Plan path to Emirates First Class before defaulting to Skywards. No surcharges on the Alaska route frequently make it the more efficient use of miles for that specific redemption.
Keep Amex MR and Citi TY points in those programs until you have a confirmed award ready to book. Transfer, book immediately, and factor every dollar of cash fees into your calculation before pulling the trigger.
