Who This Program Is For
Citi ThankYou Points has one feature no other bank program matches: transfers to American Airlines AAdvantage. Chase, Amex, and Capital One cannot send points to AA. If you fly American or want Oneworld partner awards, Citi is the only transferable currency that gets you there.
Beyond AA, the program is a solid second or third transferable currency. The Star Alliance coverage through Avianca LifeMiles and Singapore KrisFlyer is strong, the SkyTeam pathway via Flying Blue works, and the card lineup now covers everything from $0 annual fee to a $595 premium card. The weak spot is hotels — the transfer partners are Choice, Wyndham, and Accor, none of which consistently deliver more than 1 cpp.
If you already hold Chase Ultimate Rewards or Amex Membership Rewards, Citi adds AA access and a second path to Star Alliance and SkyTeam. If you're building your first transferable currency, Chase or Amex covers more ground. Citi is the specialist, not the generalist.
How to Earn ThankYou Points
Citi's card portfolio splits into two tiers that matter for transfers: premium cards (Strata Elite, Strata Premier) that unlock 1:1 transfer ratios, and standard cards (Strata, Double Cash, Custom Cash) that transfer at reduced ratios unless pooled with a premium card.
Strata Elite: The Premium Play ($595/year)
The Strata Elite earns 12x on hotels and rental cars via Citi Travel, 6x on flights via Citi Travel, and 6x at restaurants Friday and Saturday 6 PM-6 AM EST (3x at restaurants other times). Everything else earns 1.5x. The 100,000-point sign-up bonus is worth $1,000+ at reasonable transfer valuations.
The $595 fee is steep. Unlike the Venture X ($395 with a $300 credit and 10,000 anniversary miles), the Strata Elite has no automatic annual credit that reduces the effective cost. You need to extract value from the elevated earn rates and the travel benefits to justify it. For most people, the Strata Premier at $95 makes more sense.
Strata Premier: The Sweet Spot ($95/year)
The Strata Premier earns 10x on hotels and rental cars via Citi Travel, 3x on restaurants, supermarkets, gas, EV charging, and air travel (capped at $100k/year in 3x spend). Everything else earns 1x. Sign-up bonus: 60,000 points.
This is the card that unlocks the program. At $95/year, it gives you full 1:1 transfer ratios on all ThankYou points across your accounts — including points earned on the $0 Double Cash and Custom Cash. The $95 effectively buys transfer access for your entire Citi relationship.
No-Fee Cards: Double Cash, Strata, Custom Cash
The Double Cash earns a flat 2% on everything as ThankYou points. The Custom Cash earns 5% on your top spending category (up to $500/cycle). The Strata earns 3x on supermarkets, transit, gas, EV, and a self-selected category, plus 2x on restaurants.
All three are strong everyday earners. The catch: their points transfer at reduced ratios. Most airline partners get 1000:700 instead of 1:1. Emirates drops to 1000:560. The fix is simple — hold a Strata Premier or Strata Elite alongside any no-fee card, and all your ThankYou points transfer at the full 1:1 ratio.

Transfer Partners
Citi transfers to 12+ airline and hotel partners. The standout is American Airlines AAdvantage — no other bank transferable currency offers this. The rest of the airline list covers Star Alliance (LifeMiles, KrisFlyer, Cathay) and SkyTeam (Flying Blue), with JetBlue for domestic.
All Citi ThankYou transfer partners (12+ programs)
- Airlines (premium card 1:1): American Airlines AAdvantage, Singapore KrisFlyer, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, JetBlue TrueBlue, Air France/KLM Flying Blue, Avianca LifeMiles, Cathay Pacific Asia Miles, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, Emirates Skywards (1000:800)
- Hotels (premium card ratios): Choice Privileges (1000:2000), Wyndham Rewards, Accor ALL (1000:500)
Standard-card holders transfer at ~1000:700 for most airlines, 1000:560 for Emirates, 1000:1400 for Choice. Pair with a premium card to unlock full ratios.
The five transfers that matter most:
- American Airlines AAdvantage (1:1) — the exclusive. Book domestic AA flights, Oneworld partner awards on British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, and Qatar. 30,000 miles gets you a one-way domestic economy award; 57,500 books Cathay business class HKG-US.
- Avianca LifeMiles (1:1) — Star Alliance with no fuel surcharges. 63,000 miles books Lufthansa business class US-Europe one-way. Consistently the cheapest path to Star Alliance premium cabins.
- Singapore KrisFlyer (1:1) — access to Singapore Suites and business class. 85,000 miles books Suites JFK-FRA-SIN. Also a Star Alliance gateway for ANA, Lufthansa, and Swiss.
- Flying Blue (1:1) — monthly Promo Rewards cut select awards 25-50%. Time a transfer with a Flying Blue sale for transatlantic business class as low as 50,000 miles one-way.
- Virgin Atlantic Flying Club (1:1) — books Delta metal at prices that beat SkyMiles. Also books ANA business class round-trip for 90,000-120,000 miles.
How to Redeem
Three paths, in descending order of value:
Transfer to Partners
The best use. Transfer to an airline partner and book award flights. With premium-card ratios at 1:1, you get the full value of the partner's award chart. Target 1.5-2.5 cpp on international premium cabin awards.
Citi Travel Portal
Book flights, hotels, and rental cars through Citi Travel at 1 cpp. Straightforward, no partner complexity. The portal is fine for domestic economy where transfer value rarely exceeds 1.5 cpp anyway. Avoid using it for international business class — transfers will almost always beat 1 cpp.
Statement Credits and Cash
Redeem at 1 cpp for statement credits, direct deposit, or gift cards. Use only as a last resort. If you're getting 1 cpp, you might as well use the portal and at least get travel out of it. The only scenario: you need cash and have no upcoming travel.
Citi ThankYou redemption playbook
- Check AA first. If you're flying domestic or Oneworld, search AAdvantage award availability. No other bank currency gets you here.
- Search Star Alliance via LifeMiles or KrisFlyer. For international premium cabins, compare pricing on both. LifeMiles is usually cheaper; KrisFlyer unlocks Singapore's own metal.
- Watch Flying Blue promos. Check the monthly Promo Rewards calendar. If your route is on sale, transfer and book immediately — promos expire fast.
- Fall back to portal at 1 cpp. For domestic economy or simple hotel bookings where transfers won't beat 1 cpp.
- Confirm your transfer ratio. If you hold only a standard card, your ratio is ~1000:700. Add a Strata Premier before transferring to unlock 1:1.
The Best Uses
AA Domestic Flights
Transfer to AAdvantage for domestic economy at 10,000-15,000 miles one-way. Not the highest cpp, but this is the only transferable currency that reaches AA. If American is your preferred domestic carrier, Citi is the only bank program that helps.
Star Alliance Business Class to Europe
Transfer 63,000 points to Avianca LifeMiles for Lufthansa or Swiss business class US-Europe one-way. No fuel surcharges. At a $3,000-4,000 cash fare, that's 4.7-6.3 cpp. This is the highest-value use of ThankYou Points for most travelers.
Singapore Suites or Business
Transfer to KrisFlyer: 85,000 miles for Suites JFK-FRA-SIN, or 65,000-70,000 for Singapore business class on select routes. Availability is limited but the product is unmatched. Worth the effort for a special trip.
Flying Blue Promo Awards
When Flying Blue runs a promo on your target route, transfer and book. Business class to Europe has appeared at 50,000 miles one-way during promos — 40% below the standard price. Check the promo calendar monthly.
Cathay Pacific and Oneworld via AA
Transfer to AA and book Oneworld partner awards. Cathay business class from the US to Hong Kong books at 57,500 AA miles one-way. Qatar Qsuites books at 70,000 AA miles one-way US-DOH. Both are strong uses that only Citi enables among bank programs.
Citi vs. Chase vs. Amex vs. Capital One
Chase Ultimate Rewards wins for most people. Hyatt transfers, United access, and a broader partner list make it the better first transferable currency. Amex Membership Rewards leads on partner count and covers Delta, ANA, and Hilton. Capital One Miles offers 2x simplicity and overlapping airline partners.
Citi's edge is narrow but real: AA AAdvantage access. If Oneworld matters to you, Citi is the only bank program in the game. It also provides a second path to LifeMiles and Flying Blue that diversifies your transfer options beyond Chase and Amex.
The practical setup: Chase or Amex as your primary transferable currency (for hotels and broad airline coverage), then a Citi Strata Premier + Double Cash combo for AA access and 2% flat earning. Total annual fee added: $95.
Bottom Line
Citi ThankYou Points is a specialist program. The AA AAdvantage transfer is its competitive moat — no other bank currency offers it. The Star Alliance coverage through LifeMiles and KrisFlyer is strong, and the card lineup lets you earn on everything from a $0 Double Cash to a $595 Strata Elite.
The hotel side is weak. The transfer ratio mechanics are confusing if you don't hold a premium card. And the program doesn't have Chase's Hyatt or Amex's partner breadth. But if AA access matters to you, Citi is the only answer. Pair a Strata Premier ($95) with a Double Cash ($0), pool the points, and you have a focused Oneworld and Star Alliance transfer engine for under $100 a year.
