World of Hyatt

Hyatt's loyalty program, widely praised as the best-value hotel points currency in the US. A fixed award chart, generous elite benefits at achievable thresholds, and a 1:1 transfer from Chase Ultimate Rewards make it disproportionately powerful relative to Hyatt's smaller portfolio.

About World of Hyatt

World of Hyatt is the loyalty program for Hyatt Hotels & Resorts, a global hospitality company with around 1,100 properties across 24 brands — from budget-friendly Hyatt Place to ultra-luxury Park Hyatt. While Hyatt's portfolio is considerably smaller than Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors, the program consistently earns top marks among points enthusiasts for two reasons: a fixed award chart that has resisted the industry-wide shift to dynamic pricing, and elite benefits — especially at the top Globalist tier — that are genuinely better than what competitors offer.

If you carry a Chase Ultimate Rewards card, World of Hyatt becomes even more compelling: Chase points transfer to Hyatt at a 1:1 ratio, instantly, with no minimums. That single fact makes Hyatt accessible to millions of people who may never stay at a Hyatt frequently enough to earn meaningful points on their own.

One partnership note: Hyatt's relationship with Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) ended May 15, 2024. SLH properties moved to Hilton Honors. Hyatt has been expanding through its 2023 acquisition of Mr & Mrs Smith, a curated boutique hotel platform with 1,500+ properties — a net positive for portfolio breadth, though benefit recognition across Mr & Mrs Smith properties is still settling.

What Hyatt Points Are Worth

The standard valuation for World of Hyatt points sits around 1.7–2.0 cents per point (cpp), making them among the most valuable hotel points in the US. To put that in concrete terms:

  • A Category 3 hotel in a major city costs roughly 12,000–15,000 points per night — the equivalent of a $200–$300 room for $0 cash.
  • A Category 6 Park Hyatt typically costs 25,000–30,000 points per night — an award worth $425–$600 at an aspirational property.
  • A Category 1 property starts as low as 3,000 points per night from May 2026 — achievable from a single hotel stay or small Chase transfer.

The fixed award chart is the key insight here. Unlike dynamic programs where a room might cost 80,000 points one night and 120,000 the next, Hyatt publishes category floors and ceilings. That predictability lets you plan trips with confidence and hold points until the right property comes along.

The no-expiration-with-activity policy (any earning or redemption in the past 24 months keeps the balance alive) is more lenient than it first appears — a single credit card purchase, dining earning, or hotel stay resets the clock.

How to Earn Hyatt Points

Earning on Hotel Stays

Base earning is 5 points per $1 spent on eligible hotel charges at most Hyatt properties. Hyatt Studios, a newer extended-stay brand, earns at a reduced 2.5 points per $1. Elite members earn bonus points on top of the base rate: +10% at Discoverist, +20% at Explorist, and +30% at Globalist.

Mr & Mrs Smith properties — Hyatt's boutique hotel partner added in 2024 — also earn at 5 points per $1 at participating locations, extending the earning universe beyond Hyatt's own brands. Confirm earning eligibility at the specific property before booking, as not all Mr & Mrs Smith locations participate.

Earning with Credit Cards

The Chase World of Hyatt Credit Card ($95 annual fee) is the easiest entry point into the program:

  • 4x points per $1 at Hyatt hotels
  • 2x points on dining, airlines, gym memberships, and local transit
  • 1x points on all other purchases
  • Automatic Discoverist status every year you hold the card
  • 1 Category 1–4 free night certificate every anniversary year, plus a second cert after $15,000 in spend

The card is worth its annual fee on the free night certificate alone — Category 1–4 properties include solid options in many major cities that regularly sell for $150–$300 per night.

Transferring from Chase Ultimate Rewards

This is the real engine for most points enthusiasts. If you hold a Chase Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, or Ink Business Preferred, you can transfer points to World of Hyatt at 1:1 — instantly, with no minimum transfer amount.

The strategy: earn Chase points aggressively on everyday spending (dining, travel, business purchases earn 2–5x with Chase cards), then transfer to Hyatt when you have a specific redemption in mind. Because transfers are instant, you can identify the award, confirm availability, then transfer the exact amount needed — no speculative transfers, no locked balance.

Elite Status: The Globalist Advantage

World of Hyatt has four status tiers, earned by qualifying nights or base points per calendar year:

  • Member — free to join, base 5 pts/$1 earning
  • Discoverist — 10 qualifying nights or 25,000 base points; +10% bonus earning, preferred room at check-in
  • Explorist — 30 qualifying nights or 50,000 base points; +20% bonus, guaranteed 2 PM checkout, 4 suite upgrade awards
  • Globalist — 60 qualifying nights or 100,000 base points; +30% bonus, guaranteed 4 PM checkout, complimentary breakfast/lounge, resort fees waived on all eligible rates

The Globalist tier is where the program really separates itself from competitors. Complimentary breakfast adds $30–$60 per person per day in real value. The resort fee waiver on paid rates — not just award stays — saves $25–$100 per night at properties that charge them. Guaranteed 4 PM checkout is the best in the luxury hotel space; most programs offer this only "subject to availability."

Discoverist is achievable with just the Chase Hyatt card (auto-granted). Globalist requires genuine commitment — 60 nights is ambitious unless you travel extensively for work — but the benefits justify aggressive pursuit for heavy hotel travelers.

Milestone Rewards

Beyond tier qualification, Hyatt offers milestone rewards for nights stayed within a calendar year — a distinctive feature not found in most competing programs:

  • 30 nights — 1 Category 1–4 free night certificate
  • 40 nights — Guest of Honor benefit (book award stays for friends/family at member rates, even when you're not on the trip)
  • 60 nights — 1 Category 1–7 free night certificate + 2 suite upgrade awards
  • 80 nights — 1 additional Category 1–4 free night certificate
  • 100 nights — 1 additional Category 1–7 free night certificate
  • 150 nights — Ultimate free night (valid at any Hyatt property, no category cap)

The Category 1–7 certificate is especially valuable — it covers nearly all mainstream Park Hyatts and Andaz properties. Milestone certs expire 12 months after issuance, so only pursue them if you have a specific redemption in mind.

Redeeming Hyatt Points

Hyatt uses a fixed award chart with 8 categories. In May 2026, the pricing structure expands from three tiers (off-peak / standard / peak) to five tiers per category (Lowest / Low / Moderate / Upper / Top). Hyatt has committed to maintaining fixed pricing — this is not a shift to dynamic pricing, but a more granular chart. Most hotels will initially be assigned to Lowest, Low, or Moderate. Upper and Top pricing will roll out gradually through 2026 and beyond. Reservations booked before May 2026 are honored at current rates. Note: The award chart applies to Hyatt-branded hotels (Park Hyatt, Andaz, Grand Hyatt, etc.); partner collections like Mr & Mrs Smith price differently and availability varies by property.

May 2026 chart impact: The new Top tier raises maximum prices significantly — Cat 7 rises from 35,000 to 55,000 points and Cat 8 from 45,000 to 75,000 points. The Lowest tier can be cheaper than old off-peak pricing (Cat 1 starts at 3,000 vs. 3,500). Most stays will land in the middle tiers. Book current reservations before May if you have a target property already identified.

Redemption Playbook

Before you transfer or book

  • Set a cpp floor of 1.7¢. Cash price ÷ points required × 100 = your cpp. Below 1.7¢: reconsider. Above 2.0¢: strong redemption.
  • Confirm standard award availability first. Search in the Hyatt app before transferring Chase points. Transfers are instant but irreversible.
  • Search multiple nights. Off-peak pricing can vary night by night — a 5-night stay might have 3 nights at a lower tier and 2 at a higher one. Price each night individually.
  • Watch for peak constraints at Cat 6–8. Popular properties (Park Hyatt NY, Andaz Maui) frequently show limited standard availability. Search 6–13 months out; availability opens at 13 months.
  • Use free night certificates strategically. Cat 1–4 certs (from Chase card or milestones) cover the same inventory as point awards — use them at properties with limited standard availability to stretch your points further.

Sweet Spots

Hyatt's sweet spots follow a consistent pattern: high-end properties in expensive cash markets where the award chart caps the point cost. The more a property costs per night in cash, the more your points are worth in that redemption.

Park Hyatt New York

  • Best use: 4–5 night anniversary or bucket-list stay in Manhattan.
  • Why: Cat 6, 25,000–40,000 pts/night post-May 2026; cash rates often $800–$1,500/night. A five-night stay in points can represent $4,000–$7,500 in value — achievable with a single Chase Sapphire Preferred sign-up bonus.
  • How to find: Search 6–13 months out; award inventory opens at 13 months. Check midweek dates first — cash demand is lower and more standard award space typically releases.
  • Gotcha: Standard award availability is notoriously limited on peak weekends. If you don't find space, check back daily — cancellations release frequently close to the date.

Andaz Maui at Wailea

  • Best use: 3–5 night Hawaii resort stay, especially as a Globalist.
  • Why: Cat 6 resort with daily resort fees ($40–$60/night) that Globalists avoid entirely. Point awards routinely hit 2.0–2.5¢ vs. $700–$900 cash rates in peak season.
  • How to find: Book far in advance — this is one of the most in-demand Hyatt properties. Search all dates in your window and be flexible on check-in day.
  • Gotcha: Non-Globalists still pay resort fees on point awards — run the cash vs. points math factoring in those fees.

Park Hyatt Tokyo

  • Best use: 3-night splurge in Tokyo; best paired with a Japan itinerary.
  • Why: Cat 6; cash rates $700–$900 on weekends. The award chart caps the cost; the gap between cash and points value is reliably wide for a recognizable luxury landmark.
  • How to find: Book 13 months out. Standard award space is more available here than at comparable US properties.
  • Gotcha: Yen exchange rates affect how compelling cash is as an alternative — check the math at booking time.

Category 1–4 Free Night Certificates

  • Best use: Plugging in a free night at a solid city hotel when point awards aren't releasing for your dates.
  • Why: Certs book the same standard award inventory as point awards. Cat 4 covers Andaz and Hyatt Regency properties in major cities that run $200–$350/night in cash.
  • How to find: Use the Hyatt app and filter by "Use Certificate." The cert booking path shows exactly which properties are eligible for your cert's category cap.
  • Gotcha: Certs expire 12 months after issuance — don't earn a milestone cert unless you have a trip planned in the next year.

Where It Disappoints

The program's smaller footprint is the primary limitation. In many secondary markets and much of Asia outside of major cities, Hyatt has no properties — which means your points and status go unused on trips to those destinations. Marriott and Hilton have 3–7x more properties globally.

Standard award availability at the most popular Category 6–8 properties can be genuinely difficult to find, particularly during peak seasons. You'll want to search 6–13 months out.

The May 2026 award chart expansion is a meaningful devaluation at the top. If a property moves to Upper or Top tier pricing, a Cat 8 stay could cost up to 75,000 points per night — 67% more than the old peak of 45,000. The rollout is gradual, but over time more premium-demand nights will price into those tiers.

Hyatt also has no meaningful airline transfer partnerships — you can't move points out to airline programs at a useful ratio. What goes in doesn't come out.

Bottom Line

World of Hyatt punches well above its weight class. The fixed award chart (even with the May 2026 expansion), best-in-class Globalist benefits, and 1:1 Chase transfer make it the default destination for hotel points among Chase cardholders. If you hold a Chase Sapphire card, it's worth keeping World of Hyatt as your primary hotel program even if you only stay a few nights per year — the transfer option means you're never locked in, and you can top up for a specific redemption on demand.

It's not right for everyone: if your travels take you to destinations without Hyatt properties, or if you need a single program that covers every trip, Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors will serve you better. But for urban travelers, luxury hotel enthusiasts, and anyone already in the Chase ecosystem, World of Hyatt remains hard to beat on value per point — even after the 2026 chart changes.

Common Pitfalls

Smaller portfolio than Marriott Bonvoy or Hilton Honors — availability is thinner in some markets, especially secondary cities
Standard award availability can be limited at peak periods; book as far out as possible or check frequently for released space
Cash + Points awards are rarely the best use of points — run the numbers against a standard award before booking
May 2026 award chart expansion adds 5 pricing tiers per category — top-tier nights at Cat 7–8 properties can now reach 55,000–75,000 points, up from 35,000–45,000. Book before May if you have current rates in mind.
Milestone reward certificates expire 12 months after being issued — don't earn them if you have no upcoming trip planned
