What Rakuten Actually Is
Rakuten is a cashback portal. You click through their site or browser extension before buying something online, and the retailer pays Rakuten a commission. Rakuten splits that commission with you as cashback. That is the entire business model.
Formerly known as Ebates, Rakuten has paid out $4.6 billion to 17+ million members. The average member earns about $105 per year. Not life-changing money — but it is free money on purchases you were already making.
The reason Rakuten belongs on a rewards strategy site: it is one of the few portals that lets you convert cashback directly into Amex Membership Rewards points or Bilt Rewards points. That changes the math entirely.
How It Works
Three steps. Every time.
- Activate: Click through Rakuten (website, browser extension, or mobile app) to the retailer you want.
- Shop and buy: Complete your purchase in the same browser session. Do not close the tab, use a different coupon extension, or navigate away before checkout.
- Get paid: Cashback appears in your Rakuten account within a few days. Rakuten pays out quarterly — February 15, May 15, August 15, November 15 — via PayPal or check.
Rates range from 1% to 18%+ depending on the retailer and current promotions. Major retailers like Walmart and Target sit at 1–3% most days. Fashion, beauty, and specialty retailers run higher. During seasonal sales events (Black Friday, back-to-school), rates spike across the board.
The Amex MR Integration — This Is the Main Event
If you hold an Amex card that earns Membership Rewards points (Gold, Platinum, Green, or Business equivalents), you can flip a switch in your Rakuten account settings to receive all cashback as MR points instead of cash. The conversion: 1% cashback = 1 MR point per dollar spent.
On paper, that looks like a downgrade. 3% cashback at a retailer gives you $3 in cash or 3 MR points per $100. But MR points are worth more than 1 cent each when transferred to airline and hotel partners. At a conservative 2 cents per point valuation, those 3 MR points are worth 6 cents — double the cash value.
Run the numbers on a real scenario: you spend $5,000 at Rakuten-partnered retailers over a year at an average 4% rate. As cash, that is $200. As MR points, that is 20,000 points — worth $300–$400 when transferred to Hyatt (1.7–2.0 cpp) or used for business class flights via ANA or Aeroplan (2+ cpp). The gap gets wider at higher valuations.
Bilt Rewards Integration
Rakuten also supports earning Bilt Rewards points on portal purchases. If you are a Bilt member, you can link your accounts and earn Bilt points through Rakuten shopping.
This matters because Bilt points transfer 1:1 to 14+ airline and hotel partners, including World of Hyatt, Air Canada Aeroplan, and American Airlines. If you already use the Bilt Mastercard for rent and dining, adding Rakuten as a Bilt earning channel extends your points haul into online shopping.
The choice between Amex MR and Bilt depends on which ecosystem you are more invested in. Both are strong. Pick one and stay consistent — splitting earnings between programs dilutes your balance in both.
How to Maximize Rakuten
- Install the browser extension. This is non-negotiable. The extension pops up automatically when you visit a Rakuten partner site. Without it, you will forget to click through and leave cashback on the table.
- Stack with credit card category bonuses. Rakuten cashback is separate from your credit card rewards. Buy from Sephora through Rakuten (earning portal cashback) on an Amex Gold (earning 4x at US supermarkets if buying gift cards) and you get both.
- Check rates before big purchases. Rates fluctuate daily. If a retailer shows 2% today but has historically offered 8% during sales events, wait if you can. Rakuten publishes elevated rates during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and seasonal promotions.
- Choose MR points over cash if you hold an Amex MR card. The math favors points at any transfer valuation above 1 cpp — and most useful transfers land at 1.5–2.5 cpp.
- Use in-store cashback for brick-and-mortar shopping. Link a card in the Rakuten app and earn at participating physical stores. Fewer retailers participate than online, but it is still free money.
- Time your new member bonus. The 10% extra cashback for the first 7 days caps at $50. Sign up right before a planned large purchase to extract the full $50 bonus.
Honest Limitations
Rakuten is not perfect. Here is what to watch for.
- Rate volatility. The 12% rate you saw at a retailer last week might be 1% today. Rakuten has no obligation to maintain any specific rate, and rates change without warning.
- Tracking failures. Ad blockers, VPNs, and competing browser extensions (especially coupon auto-appliers like Honey) can break Rakuten's tracking cookie. If your purchase does not register, you have to file a missing cashback claim and wait for manual review.
- Quarterly payment delays. You cannot access your cashback instantly. The quarterly payment schedule means money sits in your Rakuten account for up to 4 months before it reaches your PayPal or mailbox.
- Not every retailer participates. Amazon offers Rakuten cashback only in specific categories, not sitewide. Some major retailers are absent entirely. Check before assuming coverage.
- Portal stacking conflicts. You cannot use Rakuten and another cashback portal (like TopCashback or BeFrugal) on the same purchase. Pick the one with the better rate.
Bottom Line
Rakuten is the easiest points-earning tool most people are not using. Install the extension, set your payout to Amex MR points (or Bilt, depending on your setup), and forget about it. The extension does the reminding for you.
The average $105/year in cashback is nice. But redirect that into Amex MR points and suddenly you are earning transferable points on routine online shopping — points worth $150–$250 at reasonable transfer valuations. For 30 seconds of effort per purchase, that is hard to beat.
