About British Airways / The Club (Avios)

British Airways rebranded its Executive Club as The Club in late 2024. The currency — Avios — stayed the same. What makes this program unusual is that Avios are a shared currency across four airlines: British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling. You can hold accounts at all four and transfer Avios between them at 1:1 for free. One Avios balance, four booking platforms, and access to the full Oneworld alliance of 14 member airlines.

The award pricing model is distance-based. BA publishes a fixed zone chart: shorter flights cost fewer Avios, longer flights cost more, and the price does not change based on demand. This is the opposite of Delta's pure dynamic model — you can plan a redemption months in advance knowing exactly how many Avios it costs. The catch is that award seat availability still varies, so the price is fixed but whether you can book is not.

The program is free to join, and Avios never expire as long as you have any earning or redemption activity at least once every 36 months. A single £1 Amazon gift card purchased through the BA eStore resets the clock.

What Avios are worth

Avios span a wide value range: as low as 0.6 cents on poor redemptions (upgrades on short-haul domestic) to 2.0+ cents on the best uses. A realistic working value for planning is 1.2–1.5 cents per Avios.

The zone-based chart means value is predictable once you know which zone a route falls in. A 7,500-Avios one-way Zone 2 award (651–1,150 miles) on American Airlines — no fuel surcharges, taxes of under $20 — easily clears 2 cents per Avios when replacing a $150+ domestic cash ticket. A 40,000-Avios transatlantic economy award on BA-operated metal, with $400 in fuel surcharges tacked on, may deliver under 1 cent per Avios on a $500 route. The metal matters as much as the Avios cost. See the guide to valuing points and miles before committing to any redemption.

How to earn Avios

Avios has one of the best accumulation ecosystems of any airline program. Four major transferable currencies convert at 1:1, and the co-brand companion voucher is the most powerful card benefit in the UK market. Here is how each channel works.

Flying on BA and Oneworld partners

BA-marketed flights earn Avios based on distance multiplied by a fare class multiplier. Economy Light earns roughly 25% of distance in Avios; a flexible economy ticket earns 100%; Business class earns 150%; First earns 200%. A 3,000-mile transatlantic flight in flexible economy earns ~3,000 Avios; the same flight in Business earns ~4,500 Avios. Tier Points accrue on the same flights and count toward annual status qualification.

Oneworld partner flights earn Avios at rates set by each partner's earning table. Always check BA's partner earning chart before assuming full earn — basic economy fares on some partners earn 0 Avios.

Credit card earn and the companion voucher

Four major transferable currencies convert to Avios at 1:1 with no transfer fee and no minimum:

  • Chase Ultimate Rewards — Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve, Ink Business Preferred
  • Amex Membership Rewards — Platinum, Gold, Green, and business cards
  • Citi ThankYou Points — Premier, Prestige
  • Capital One miles — Venture, Venture X

This is a genuine advantage. Avios are one of the easiest airline currencies to accumulate without flying BA at all. If you hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve and an Amex Platinum, you already have two paths to Avios at 1:1.

For UK cardholders, the BA American Express card carries the program's most powerful benefit: the Travel Together Ticket. Spend £20,000 in a calendar year on the BA Amex and earn a companion voucher — a 2-for-1 on any BA Avios award booking for two years. One person's Avios covers two seats. On a Club World (Business Class) transatlantic award priced at 80,000 Avios per person round-trip, the companion voucher lets you bring a second passenger for 0 extra Avios. That is the single highest-value co-brand benefit available on a UK credit card.

US cardholders note: The BA Visa Signature card issued by Chase in the US earns Avios directly (3x on BA, 2x on hotels and restaurants, 1x elsewhere) but does NOT include the Travel Together Ticket. That benefit is exclusive to the UK-issued Amex product. US cardholders are better served treating Chase UR as the Avios accumulation engine and transferring when needed.

Shopping portal and dining

The BA eStore shopping portal earns bonus Avios at hundreds of online retailers. Rates vary — typically 2–6 Avios per £1, occasionally higher during promotions. Worth enabling passively; not a primary earning strategy. Any transaction, even a small one, also resets your 36-month activity clock. BA Dining earns Avios at participating UK restaurants; coverage outside the UK is limited.

Transfers in

Chase UR, Amex MR, Citi ThankYou, and Capital One all transfer at 1:1. Transfers are typically instant for Chase and Amex; Citi and Capital One may take 24–48 hours. Transfer only when you have a confirmed redemption in front of you — never speculatively. Avios cannot transfer out of The Club to other programs, so they are a one-way door.

Oneworld partner network

Oneworld has 14 member airlines covering all major regions. For Avios holders, the alliance delivers two practical capabilities: book partner-operated award flights using Avios at BA's distance-based prices, and have The Club status recognized at Oneworld carriers worldwide.

Booking partner flights: When you book an Oneworld partner award through BA, you pay Avios at BA's zone-based chart — not the partner airline's own award chart. This can be better or worse depending on the route. AA domestic awards using BA's chart are excellent. Some long-haul partner routes are overpriced relative to booking through the partner's own program.
Fuel surcharges by carrier: BA charges fuel surcharges on BA-operated flights. American Airlines charges none. Iberia charges less than BA. Aer Lingus is generally moderate. Where you have a choice of metal, the operating carrier determines your total out-of-pocket cost — not just the Avios required.

The Club elite status

The Club moved to a revenue-based qualification model in April 2025. Tier Points are now primarily earned based on fare paid and cabin class — the frequent-flyer-who-buys-cheap-tickets path to status is mostly closed. The four tiers are Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Gold Guest List.

  • Bronze — 3,500 Tier Points: Oneworld Ruby. Priority boarding on BA. Practical benefit: modest. The floor for recognition across the alliance.
  • Silver — 7,500 Tier Points: Oneworld Sapphire. Business class lounge access on international itineraries at partner carriers. Priority check-in. Meaningful if you travel internationally on Oneworld partners.
  • Gold — 20,000 Tier Points: Oneworld Emerald. First class lounge access on international itineraries. Highest upgrade priority. This is the tier that delivers genuine lounge access across 14 airlines — worth pursuing only if you fly enough to earn it organically.
  • Gold Guest List — 65,000 Tier Points: Invitation-basis. Dedicated account manager, guaranteed upgrades on select BA flights, exclusive events. Relevant to a tiny fraction of flyers.

Who should pursue status: travelers who already spend heavily on BA-marketed fares in premium cabins. The revenue-based model means status does not make sense to chase artificially. If you are flying BA twice a year in economy, treat Avios as a redemption currency, not a status chase.

Redeeming Avios

BA's zone-based award chart sets a fixed Avios price for each distance band. Economy is the base; business class costs roughly twice the economy rate. All prices are per person, one-way. Round-trip pricing is simply double the one-way cost — there is no round-trip discount.

BA distance-based award chart — economy one-way (8 zones)
Zone Distance Economy (Avios) Business (~2x)
Zone 1 0–650 miles 4,500 ~9,000
Zone 2 651–1,150 miles 7,500 ~15,000
Zone 3 1,151–2,000 miles 9,750 ~19,500
Zone 4 2,001–3,000 miles 12,750 ~25,500
Zone 5 3,001–4,000 miles 24,750 ~49,500
Zone 6 4,001–5,500 miles 30,000 ~60,000
Zone 7 5,501–6,500 miles 37,500 ~75,000
Zone 8 6,501+ miles 40,000 ~80,000

Redemption checklist

  • Check the operating carrier. BA-operated means fuel surcharges. AA-operated or Iberia-operated means lower or no surcharges. The carrier matters as much as the Avios cost.
  • Calculate total cost including fees. Add Avios value + taxes + fuel surcharges. A "cheap" 40,000-Avios award with $500 in fees may be worse than a 60,000-Avios award with $50 in fees.
  • Book AA domestic online at ba.com. American Airlines domestic awards can be searched and booked directly at ba.com. Availability mirrors what AA shows to its own members on Saver awards.
  • Book off-peak for Saver availability. BA only releases Saver (lowest Avios) pricing when award seats are designated as available — more likely on off-peak dates and routes.

Where Avios shine: the sweet spots

Avios have several genuinely excellent uses. These are worth building toward.

AA domestic short-haul (Zone 2: 7,500 Avios one-way). Routes under 1,150 miles on American Airlines — LAX–SFO, NYC–BOS, DFW–ORD — cost 7,500 Avios one-way in economy. No fuel surcharges. Taxes run $5–20. When cash prices for those routes are $150–300, you are getting 2.0–4.0 cents per Avios. This is the best domestic airline award value available for most short-haul routes, and it is consistently repeatable. Zone 1 routes (under 650 miles) cost only 4,500 Avios — even better.

BA Club World transatlantic with the Travel Together Ticket. An 80,000-Avios round-trip business class award from the UK to North America normally covers one person. With the companion voucher, that same 80,000 Avios covers two seats. Fuel surcharges apply, but split between two people they are more manageable. For UK BA Amex cardholders who hit the £20,000 annual spend, this is a genuinely elite benefit.

Iberia long-haul to Madrid and South America. Iberia charges lower fuel surcharges than BA on transatlantic routes. The Avios cost is identical — same chart, same currency — but your total out-of-pocket is materially lower. A business class award from the US to Madrid via Iberia costs the same Avios as a BA-operated flight and saves you $100–200 in fees.

Aer Lingus transatlantic. Aer Lingus transatlantic awards from the US to Dublin price reasonably and carry lower surcharges than BA. A solid option for East Coast US travelers with access to AerClub.

Where Avios disappoint

The fuel surcharge problem on BA-operated long-haul is not a footnote — it is the central limitation of the program for most US-based travelers.

A transatlantic business class award on a BA-operated flight from New York to London costs approximately 80,000 Avios round-trip. That sounds competitive. Then you add the fuel surcharges: typically $300–600 per person on top of standard airport taxes. On a round-trip for two, that is $600–1,200 in fees for a supposedly "free" award. The Avios cost is not the only cost.

By comparison, a similar business class award on American Airlines — operated on an AA plane, booked through BA — carries no fuel surcharges. Taxes run $50–100 round-trip. Same Avios expenditure, $500+ less in fees. The metal determines what you actually pay.

The other structural limitation: Saver award availability on popular BA transatlantic routes is scarce. BA releases limited Saver inventory, and peak dates (summer, holidays) often show only Off-Peak pricing — which costs significantly more Avios. You may find the seat you want, just not at the rate you planned for.

Finally, the companion voucher — the program's most powerful benefit — requires the UK-issued BA Amex and £20,000 in annual spend. US cardholders do not have access to this feature on the Chase-issued BA card.

Bottom line

Avios are one of the most versatile airline currencies available, with 1:1 transfer access from four major bank programs and a fixed award chart that lets you plan redemptions in advance. The AA domestic short-haul sweet spot is the best consistent domestic award value in the market. The shared currency across BA, Iberia, Aer Lingus, and Vueling gives you genuine flexibility.

The limitation is equally clear: fly on BA metal for long-haul and the fuel surcharges will erode a significant portion of your Avios value. The program rewards travelers who can route around BA-operated flights for long-haul, or who have access to the UK companion voucher. Accumulate Avios from Chase UR or Amex MR transfers, spend them on AA domestic and Iberia transatlantic, and the program delivers reliably. Spend them on BA-operated long-haul without a companion voucher, and the value proposition weakens considerably.

Common Pitfalls

BA fuel surcharges on BA-operated award flights can be very high — often $200-600+ on transatlantic routes
Tier Point requirements increased significantly in the 2024 rebrand — status is harder to earn than before
Avios pricing on long-haul BA-operated routes in premium cabin is often poor value vs. other programs
36-month inactivity rule — set a reminder if you travel infrequently
Partner award availability (e.g., AA domestic) requires calling or online booking — not always available online
