How Cashback Portals Work
The mechanics behind portal cashback — how tracking works, why it sometimes fails, and what to look for in a portal.
What Is a Cashback Portal?
A cashback portal is a website that earns a commission from retailers when it refers customers, then shares a portion of that commission with shoppers. You click through the portal to a retailer, make a purchase, and earn cashback.
How Tracking Works
When you click through a portal, it places a tracking cookie in your browser. This cookie tells the retailer: "This customer came from portal X." If you complete a purchase within the cookie's valid window (typically 1–7 days), the retailer pays the portal a commission.
The portal then credits a portion to your account — usually within a few business days to a few weeks, with a "pending" period before the amount becomes withdrawable.
Why Tracking Sometimes Fails
- Ad blockers: These prevent the tracking cookie from being set
- Multiple tabs: Opening other retailer tabs after clicking through can overwrite the portal cookie
- App checkout: If you switch from the browser to a mobile app to complete checkout, the browser cookie doesn't transfer
- Coupon codes: Some portals exclude purchases made with third-party coupon codes
- Cookie expiration: If you don't complete the purchase within the cookie window
What to Look for in a Portal
The key factors when choosing a portal for a specific purchase:
- Rate: Compare rates across portals for the same retailer — they often differ significantly
- Payout method: Cashback vs. gift cards vs. PayPal — some methods reduce effective value
- Minimum withdrawal: Some portals require $5–25 before you can withdraw
- Pending period: How long until cashback is available to withdraw
- Track record: User reputation for reliable tracking
